How to Install the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), UD cable (appropriate type), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using specific sealing kits), Vinyl tape (if using specific cable types)
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Failure to follow this instruction will result in serious or fatal injury. Before beginning, ensure all apparatus in the work area are completely de-energized. Verify the contents of the package are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; it should turn freely without resistance. Replace any damaged components.
- Prepare Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the product manual for removing the outer jacket and managing neutral or drain wires. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove the cable shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush any bare aluminum conductors immediately. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Install Compression Lug
Install the compression lug onto the prepared conductor. Rotate the lug to spread any inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant ONLY. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Maintain cleanliness. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. WARNING: Only operate with a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool. Consult your company’s safe work practices for required tool length. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
