Overview

The ABB 161LRJS-C-5270 is a 15kV, 200 Amp Loadbreak Jacket Seal Elbow Connector engineered for medium-voltage cable systems. This connector supports cable insulation diameters from 0.805 to 1.060 inches and accommodates 4/0 AWG stranded copper wire, making it ideal for standard industrial and utility applications. The bi-metal compression lug ensures reliable electrical continuity and mechanical strength, critical for medium-voltage distribution networks. Key features include a fully shielded, fully submersible molded rubber housing with 100% peroxide-cured EPDM materials for long-term durability. The loadbreak design enables safe, hot-line maintenance without power interruption, reducing downtime in critical operations. The built-in jacket seal prevents moisture ingress, protecting connections from environmental contaminants and corrosion. This connector meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 for 15kV voltage class, with a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 8.3kV and phase-to-phase voltage of 14.4kV. It provides a 95kV BIL impulse withstand, 34kV AC one-minute withstand, and 53kV DC 15-minute withstand. The 200 Amp continuous and loadbreak rating, along with 10kA symmetrical momentary and fault close capability, ensures robust performance in demanding electrical environments. Typical applications include underground distribution systems, switchgear terminations, and pad-mounted transformers where medium-voltage cable connections require both loadbreak capability and environmental sealing. The 161LRJS series is designed for connecting to and operating 15kV Class, 200 Amp distribution apparatus, providing a convenient method to connect/disconnect cable and equipment on power distribution systems. How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation and initial connection of 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Sealing strips (3), Mastic strips, Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate connector (for neutral wires)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Precautions

Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions thoroughly. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness. If installing a 162LRJS, lubricate and install the test point cap if not already present. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the UD cable to ensure sufficient slack for future operation. Mark the bushing centerline and pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond it. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the centerline. Unwrap the neutral wires past the bushing centerline and cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline. Connect the neutral wires to the tank ground with a jumper or grounding braid, providing extra length for hotstick operation.

  3. Apply Mastic and Prepare Insulation

Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them firmly into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the embedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if necessary to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Carefully remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  5. Lubricate and Assemble the Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Ensure the insulation remains clean and free of dirt. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting it tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for future elbow operation.

  7. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Securely fasten a fully insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. Do not operate by hand.
