How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic strips (3), Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires)
- Safety First: De-energize and Inspect Apparatus
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious injury or death.
- Prepare Cable for Training
Train the UD cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Mark the centerline of the bushing with tape and pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the centerline. Unwrap neutral wires past the bushing centerline and cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Neutral Wires
Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires back over the mastic, pressing them into it. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the diameter and cover all mastic with vinyl tape.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Install Compression Lug
Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp according to the lug's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Operate the connection using a fully insulated 'hotstick' type tool; do not operate by hand. Consult your company's safe work practices for the required tool length.
