How to Install the 161LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 161LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a bushing or accessory device.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire strippers, Utility knife
Supplies needed:
161LRJS Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Supplied Lubricant, Mastic sealing strips, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG Copper wire, Neutral wire connector, HV Insulated caps (if needed)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized to prevent serious injury or fatality. Verify all package contents are complete and undamaged, checking for proper fit with cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if encountered. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. If the product came with shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing.
- Cable Training and Preparation
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Mark the bushing centerline and pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond it. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the centerline. Unwrap neutral wires past the bushing centerline and cut the cable squarely at the centerline. Wrap one mastic strip around the jacket, stretching slightly. Bend all neutral wires back over the mastic and press them in. Wrap a second mastic strip, overlapping the neutral wires, and use a third if needed to build up the diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the supplied chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Elbow Assembly
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion and wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Concentric Neutral Connection
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing and Perform Voltage Test
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. ONLY LUBRICATE IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Using a fully insulated hotstick tool, connect the elbow to the bushing with a fast, firm, straight motion, ensuring the internal lock engages. Do not operate by hand. If using a 162LRJS with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the circuit is energized; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. WARNING: Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
