Overview

The ABB 161LRJS-B-5240 is a 15kV, 200 Amp Loadbreak Jacket Seal Elbow Connector designed for medium-voltage cable terminations in utility and industrial power distribution systems. This elbow connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.635 inch to 0.905 inch and is compatible with 1/0 AWG stranded copper or aluminum conductors. The bi-metal compression lug ensures reliable electrical contact and mechanical strength when terminating to switchgear, transformers, or other distribution equipment. This loadbreak elbow connector features a molded EPDM jacket seal to maintain environmental protection and dielectric integrity in outdoor or underground installations. The 200 Amp rating supports branch circuit and feeder applications where continuous current loads do not exceed 200 Amperes. The elbow design allows for 90-degree terminations, optimizing space in tight enclosures and reducing installation time compared to straight connectors.

How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LRJS (without test point) and 162LRJS (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Sealing strips (3), Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and De-energize Apparatus

Verify package contents, component fit, and lug/probe threads. Read instructions and gather all tools. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. If a test point cap is not installed, lubricate and install it.

  2. Train Cable

Train the UD cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Mark the bushing centerline and pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond it. Unwrap neutral wires past the centerline and cut the cable squarely at the centerline.

  3. Prepare Cable End with Mastic

Apply the first mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap the second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.

  4. Prepare Conductor and Install Compression Lug

Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the chart packaged with it, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Finish Insulation Preparation

Remove the remaining insulation shield as indicated by the cable cut back template. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  6. Assemble Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating part(s). Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant.

  7. Align Elbow and Secure Probe

Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  8. Connect Concentric Neutral

Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  9. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Operate the elbow using a fully insulated 'hotstick' type tool as per operating instructions; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.

  10. Perform Voltage Test (162LRJS only)

If using the 162LRJS model, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; it is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, etc., or use of the wrong measuring equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
