How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding. This product is designed to terminate various UD cables and connect to 15kV class 200 ampere loadbreak bushings or accessory devices.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Cable cutting tools, Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to lug chart), Probe wrench (supplied), Full insulated hotstick type live-line tool, Multimeter (for voltage test, if applicable)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing (supplied), Compression Lug (supplied), Probe (supplied), Lubricant (supplied, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires to ground), Vinyl tape (for drain wires, if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using sealing kit), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Review
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Do not touch or move energized products. Review all safety warnings and ensure installation is performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the package contents for completeness. Verify proper fit of all components, including threading the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield according to your cable type (e.g., 9-5/8 inches of outer jacket, 7-1/8 inches of copper tape shield). Manage neutral or drain wires by unwrapping, binding, folding them back, and taping, or connect them to the tank ground using a jumper or braid. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end (e.g., 2-1/8 inches of insulation, 6-7/8 inches of insulation shield), cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the specific instructions supplied with that kit to complete the grounding installation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with the connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. DO NOT HOLD IN THIS POSITION. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion. Use sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
