How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation and assembly.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied with product, do not substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Vinyl tape, Conductive copper tape (if using specific sealing kits), Cold shrink tube (if using specific sealing kits)
- Perform Pre-Installation Inspection and Ensure Safety
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; replace any damaged components if resistance is encountered. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work area.
- Prepare Cable End
Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor, ensuring the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart packaged with your compression lug for recommended crimp tool information. Start the crimp at the crimp line mark and rotate 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Remove Insulation Shield and Bevel
Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back from the cable end. Ensure the cut is straight, smooth, and squared, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm).
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow and Connect Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow came pre-ordered with a ground wire, skip this insertion. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions to complete the grounding.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
DANGER: Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. Do not operate by hand.
