How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables, including cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick, Electrical tape
Supplies needed:
161LR/162LR Elbow Connector Kit (Housing, Lug, Probe, Lubricant), UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cable sealing kit (optional), Conductive copper tape (optional)
- Perform Safety Checks and Inspect Components
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components ensure proper fit with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly, check for damage and replace the component.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Based on your specific cable type (e.g., non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the detailed instructions in the product documentation for removing the outer jacket and preparing the neutral or ground wires. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first at this stage.
- Strip Cable and Install Compression Lug
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor, then position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield, ensuring the cut is straight, smooth, and squared, without cutting or nicking the insulation. Bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. If the elbow was pre-ordered with a ground wire, proceed to the next step. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the installation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with this step. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. Securely fasten a full insulated “hotstick” type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing (at this point the contacts are approximately 4 inches apart). DO NOT HOLD IN THIS POSITION BUT IMMEDIATELY PUSH THE ELBOW HOME WITH A FAST, FIRM, STRAIGHT MOTION to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
