How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR (without test point) and 162LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors. It covers cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, grounding, and final connection to a de-energized bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable Cutter, Measuring Tape, Cable Stripper, Wire Brush, Crimp Tool, Probe Wrench, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG Copper Wire, Neutral Wire Connector

  1. Prepare the Cable for Termination

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before starting. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions to cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline and remove the outer jacket and/or shield to the specified lengths (e.g., 9-5/8 inches for jacketed cables). Manage neutral or drain wires as required, binding or folding them back. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.

  2. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Ensure the compression lug's threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back from the cable end and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Connect Grounding and Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. If the elbow was preordered with a ground wire, this step may be modified. For concentric neutral cables, twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Use a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to connect the elbow to the bushing. Do not operate by hand. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
