Overview

The ABB 161LR-B5230-S is a 15kV, 200 Amp loadbreak elbow connector engineered for medium-voltage power distribution systems. This model features a cold shrinkable jacket seal (designated by 'S') for superior environmental protection and simplified installation in utility, industrial, and commercial applications. The connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.635 to 0.905 inches (16.13-22.99 mm), making it compatible with a wide range of medium-voltage cables. The integrated bi-metal compression lug ensures reliable electrical connections for both stranded/compressed conductors sized #1 AWG and solid/compact conductors sized 1/0 AWG. This dual-material design provides optimal conductivity and mechanical strength, reducing the risk of connection failures in high-load environments. The loadbreak elbow is designed for applications requiring safe, load-interruptible connections without a test point, streamlining system design where testing is performed at other points in the circuit. Key specifications include a 15kV voltage rating and 200 Amp current rating, meeting the demands of medium-voltage distribution networks. The 161 Series construction delivers durability and long-term performance in outdoor and indoor environments. Proper conductor sizing and insulation diameter compatibility are critical for optimal performance and safety—refer to the ABB catalog for detailed conductor code selection (e.g., 230 for #1 AWG stranded/compressed or 240 for 1/0 AWG solid/compact). This connector is part of ABB’s Installation Products line, a trusted solution for medium-voltage infrastructure requiring dependable loadbreak connections. Its robust design minimizes maintenance needs while ensuring safe power flow in critical applications.

How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug installation, and elbow assembly.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp Tool, Wire Brush, Hotstick, Cable Cutting Tool, Wire Strippers

Supplies needed:

UD Cable, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper Wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate Ground Connector, Vinyl Tape (if applicable), Cold Shrink Tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive Copper Tape (if using sealing kit)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Ensure Safety

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high-voltage safety practices. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation, typically 24-36 inches (610-914mm) beyond the bushing centerline. Prepare concentric neutral wires or drain wires according to your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), ensuring proper binding and folding back as specified in the product instructions. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.

  3. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Ground the Elbow

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow is preordered with a ground wire, skip this step. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool as per operating instructions; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Consult your company's safe work practices for the required tool length.
