How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors. It covers essential cable preparation, compression lug installation, elbow assembly, grounding, and the final connection to a de-energized bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Cable Cutting Tool, Wire Strippers, Wire Brush, Crimp Tool, Hotstick (Insulated Live-Line Tool)

Supplies needed:

161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Appropriate Grounding Connector

  1. Perform Initial Component Checks and Safety Preparations

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Inspect the package contents to confirm all parts (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with your cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. If supplied with shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work area.

  2. Prepare and Train the Cable

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket. For jacketed copper tape shield cables, also remove 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of the copper tape shield and wrap conductive copper tape over the end. Prepare neutral or drain wires as required for your specific cable type, ensuring adequate length for grounding connections.

  3. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back from the cable end, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Grounding Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions to complete the grounding installation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED BEFORE PROCEEDING. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
