How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and final assembly.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire Strippers, Wire Brush, Crimp Tool, Probe Wrench, Hotstick, Utility Knife
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Kit (161LR or 162LR), Lubricant (from kit), Compression Lug (from kit), Probe (from kit), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Neutral Wire Connector
- Perform Safety Checks and Initial Inspection
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Failure to follow instructions will result in serious injury or death. Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all kit contents for completeness and damage. Verify proper fit with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable for operational slack. Refer to the specific cable type section in the full instructions for precise measurements and preparation of neutral or drain wires. Squarely cut the cable end. Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation, avoiding conductor nicks. Wire brush aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp as per lug instructions. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of insulation shield and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the ground and neutral wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
WARNING: Only connect the elbow to a de-energized bushing. Use a fully insulated hotstick tool for all operations. CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
