How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and preparation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for terminating UD cables and connecting to 15kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick (live-line tool), Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Vinyl tape (optional), Cold shrink tube (optional), Conductive copper tape (optional)
- Initial Inspection and Safety Precautions
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain a clean work area. This installation must be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Refer to the specific cable type instructions (e.g., non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield) in the documentation to remove the outer jacket and prepare neutral or drain wires as required. For most jacketed cables, remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for successive crimps. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back from the cable end, beveling the insulation end by 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt and inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Grounding Wires
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow came with a pre-attached ground wire, skip this step. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
