How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, grounding, and connection to a bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick, Vinyl tape (if applicable)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate neutral connector, Cable sealing kit components (if applicable)
- Perform Initial Checks and Ensure Safety
Before starting, inspect all components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe) for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating products. Ensure the probe threads freely into the compression lug for approximately four turns without resistance. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious or fatal injury.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the neutral or ground wires and cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline as per the specific instructions for your cable type. Remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, aligning its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for successive crimps, then wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8” (175mm) of the insulation shield, beveling the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Establish Grounding and Neutral Connection
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow was preordered with a ground wire, proceed to the next step. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
DANGER: Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Connect the elbow to the bushing using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
