How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick tool, Measuring tape
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper ground wire, Appropriate neutral wire connector, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Mating 15kV class loadbreak bushing, Cleaning supplies
- Verify Safety and Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all package contents and components for completeness, damage, proper fit with cable and mating products. Check probe threads by threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness.
- Train and Prepare Cable
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Depending on your specific cable type (non-jacketed/jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the detailed instructions in the product documentation. This involves unwrapping neutral wires, removing the outer jacket, or removing the copper tape shield to the specified lengths, and cutting the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If applicable, install cold shrink tubes or wrap conductive copper tape as instructed for your cable type.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor and ensure the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield, beveling the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble Elbow and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If your elbow was preordered with a ground wire or if you are using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow those specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to De-energized Bushing
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT BOTH THE TRANSFORMER AND THE ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED BEFORE PROCEEDING. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Attach a hotstick tool securely to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Remove any insulated cap from the bushing using the hotstick. Withdraw the elbow from its parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
