Special Features | Power Cable Joints utilize permanently crimped connectors. PCJ housings are fully insulated, shielded and sealed for direct-burial, vault, submersible and other servere service applications. Units have been designed and tested per IEEE Standard 404 to ensure system matched performance and ratings equal to the cable to which the splice will be installed. Power Cable Joints are available in two styles. Style 1 uses a single-piece housing that is sized to accommodate a specific range of cable - ideally suited to straight splicing of the same or similar cable. Style 2 designs incorporate a universal housing with separate cable adapters to allow transition splices of different types and sizes of cable |

How to Install the 15PCJ1F2230 Single Core Joint
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 15PCJ1F2230 single core joint on extruded solid dielectric cables. It covers cable preparation, conductor splice installation, and joint housing assembly. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable stripping tools, Measuring tape or ruler, Beveling tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Deburring tool, Cleaning solvent, Clean cloth, Soldering iron and supplies (or Constant force spring tool), Sanding paper or sanding tool, Heat gun
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, PVC tape, Conductor splice (compression connector), Lubricant (supplied with kit), Flat copper braid, Mastic tape, Heat shrink tubing
- Prepare Cables: Remove Jacket and Metallic Shield
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Train the cables into their final position, leaving approximately 5mm between them. Store the heat shrink tubing on either cable. Remove the jackets of both cables to the specified 'A' dimension. Carefully remove the cable metallic tape screen for the 'B' dimension shown, and secure the ends with PVC tape. Do not overlap the PVC tape onto the non-metallic screen.
- Remove Non-Metallic Screen and Prepare Insulation
WARNING: DO NOT NICK, CUT OR DAMAGE THE INSULATION SURFACE OR CONDUCTOR STRANDS. Carefully remove the cable non-metallic screen from both cables to the 'D' dimension. Bevel the edge of Cable 1. Cut the insulation to the conductor to the 'E' dimension from the end of both cables, but DO NOT remove the insulation. Install a PVC tape marker on Cable 2 to the 'B' dimension to locate the splice later.
- Temporarily Store the Joint Housing
Apply one layer (half-lapped) of PVC tape over the metallic screen, starting at the jacket and extending 10mm beyond the metallic screen end. Install a different color PVC tape marker on Cable 1 to the 'B' dimension. Lubricate both cable entrances of the splice housing. Clean and lubricate the insulation, cable non-metallic screen, and PVC taped portion of the cable metallic tape screen on Cable 1. WARNING: Cover all sharp edges of the metallic screen with PVC tape to prevent damage to the joint housing. Store the housing onto Cable 1 up to the jacket; DO NOT store it on the exposed metallic tape shield.
- Remove Cable Insulation
Remove the cable insulation from both cables to the 'E' dimension. WARNING: DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR during this process.
- Install the Conductor Splice
Wire brush the exposed conductors of both cables. Immediately insert both conductors into the conductor splice, ensuring they are fully seated. DO NOT CRIMP yet. Check the distance between insulations; if it exceeds the 'Before Crimping' 'F' dimension, stop and review instructions. Crimp the conductor splice according to the provided crimp chart. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs and clean metal chips from the assembly area. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Recheck the distance between insulations; if it exceeds the 'After Crimping' 'F' dimension, stop and review instructions.
- Clean and Lubricate Core Surfaces
WARNING: REMOVE ALL CONTAMINANTS FROM THE SURFACE OF THE INSULATION. Clean the conductor, connector, and Cable 2 insulation surfaces with cleaning solvent and a clean cloth, always wiping towards the screen end. Lubricate cable insulation surfaces using the supplied lubricant, wiping toward the screen end to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the non-metallic screen.
- Position the Joint Housing
Slide the joint housing over the crimp connector into its final position. Measure the distance 'X' between the joint housing and the PVC tape marker on each side; ensure 'X' is equal on both sides. Remove the PVC tape applied in Step 3 to expose 25mm of copper tape.
- Restore the Screen
Wrap flat copper braid around each joint housing, continuing the ends over the metallic tape screen for 20mm on each side. Attach each end of the copper braid to the metallic tape screen by either soldering or using a constant force spring.
- Restore the Outer Jacket
Lightly sand the outer surface of the jacket of both cables for a distance of 130mm. Heat both sanded areas for approximately 15 seconds; WARNING: DO NOT BURN CABLES. Wrap two layers of mastic tape at the edge of the jacket on both cables. Position the heat shrink from Cable 1 over the center of the assembly and shrink it, starting at the center and working toward the ends.
