This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing wires, crimping contacts, and assembling them into housings, including optional configurations for keying and strain relief.

Tools needed:
Wire Strippers, Appropriate Hand Crimping Tool (e.g., 90295-1, 90289-1, 90431-1), Extraction Tool (91084-1, if removing contacts or keying plugs)

Locking Clip 0.64-mm Square Contacts, Housings (single-row or double-row), Discrete solid-conductor or stranded wire, Keying Plugs (87179, optional), Cable Ties (optional), Fixed Clamps (optional)
- Prepare the Wire
Strip the insulation from the wire according to the recommended strip lengths provided in Figure 2 of the application specification. Ensure the stripped length matches the wire gauge and insulation diameter.
- Crimp the Contact to the Wire
Using the appropriate hand crimping tool for your wire size, crimp the contact onto the prepared wire. Ensure the wire barrel crimp and insulation barrel crimp meet the dimensions specified in Figure 4. CAUTION: DO NOT crimp insulation in the wire barrel. Ensure the wire conductor is flush with or slightly extended from the front end of the wire barrel, and both insulation and conductor are visible between the insulation barrel and wire barrel. CAUTION: DO NOT cut or break the insulation while crimping the contact.
- Inspect Crimp Quality
Visually inspect the crimped contact. Verify that the cutoff tab and burr do not exceed limits, the wire barrel seam is completely closed, and there is no loose wire. Check for proper wire barrel flash, front and rear bellmouths, and effective crimp length as shown in Figure 4. Ensure vertical and horizontal alignment are within 3 degrees (Figures 5 and 6), and there is no twist or roll (Figure 7). Confirm the locking lance is not deformed and the stabilizer is as specified in Figure 8.
- Load Terminated Contacts into Housing
Insert the crimped contacts into the desired cavities of the housing. Ensure the locking lance engages the housing to securely hold the contact in place. The contact cavity rib should aid in polarization.
- Install Keying Plugs (Optional)
If required for housing identification or polarization, install keying plugs (e.g., 87179) into specific contact cavities. Orient the latch of the keying plug with the extraction slot cavity. Keying plugs can be removed with an extraction tool if needed.
- Manage Wire Strain Relief (Optional)
If strain relief is required, bundle the wires with cable ties and secure them to a panel using fixed clamps. Ensure the wires are not confined in a way that restricts the floating action of the contact within the housing. Maintain minimum distances for fixed clamps as shown in Figure 10, and ensure slack in perpendicular wire bundles.
- Stack Housings (Optional)
If using right end open or left end open housing configurations, stack them end-to-end on the PC board. Align the keys of one housing with the keyways of an adjacent housing to maintain proper spacing. Note that single-row housings cannot be stacked with double-row housings.
