How to Crimp AMPMODU MOD IV, IV1/2, and V Receptacle Contacts

This guide provides instructions for preparing wires, crimping AMPMODU MOD IV, IV1/2, and V receptacle contacts, and verifying the quality of the crimped termination for optimal electrical and mechanical performance.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Appropriate crimping tool (hand tool or applicator), Crimp inspection tools (e.g., micrometer, calipers), Extraction tool (for repair/replacement)

Supplies needed:

AMPMODU MOD IV, IV1/2, or V Receptacle Contacts, AMPMODU MOD IV Connector Housings, Electrical wire (32-20 AWG), Keying plugs (optional)

  1. Prepare the Wire

Select wire within the 32-20 AWG range. Strip the wire insulation to the specific length indicated in Figure 2 of the documentation for your contact and wire size. Exercise caution to avoid nicking, scraping, or cutting the wire conductor during this process. CAUTION: Do not nick, scrape, or cut the wire conductor during the stripping operation.

  2. Crimp the Contact

Locate the receptacle contact in the appropriate crimping tool (hand tool or applicator) as per the tool's instructions. Insert the stripped wire into the contact's wire barrel. Terminate the contact by operating the tool, ensuring the wire insulation is not cut or broken, and not crimped into the contact wire barrel. CAUTION: Wire insulation shall NOT be cut or broken during the crimping operation, nor shall the insulation be crimped into the contact wire barrel.

  3. Inspect the Crimped Contact

Visually inspect the crimped contact for proper formation. Verify that the crimp height, crimp length, and bellmouths conform to the dimensions in Figures 2 and 3 of the documentation. Ensure the insulation barrel firmly grips the insulation without cutting it, and both wire conductor and insulation are visible in the transition area. Confirm the wire barrel seam is closed with no loose strands, and there is no damage, twist, roll, or excessive bending (Figures 4, 5, 6) to the mating portion of the contact.

  4. Insert Contact into Housing

Insert the crimped contact into the desired position within the AMPMODU MOD IV connector housing. Ensure the locking lance engages the housing and the contact is securely locked in place. If using keying plugs, insert them into the appropriate housing positions or onto receptacle contacts as needed to prevent incorrect mating.

  5. Verify Final Assembly

Perform a final visual inspection of the assembled connector. Confirm that the housing is not cracked or damaged, all contacts are locked in place, and the locking lances are engaged. If strain relief/pull tabs are used, ensure the wire is securely fastened to provide strain relief.
