This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing wires, crimping AMPMODU MOD IV, IV1/2, and V receptacle contacts, and properly inserting them into compatible housings to ensure reliable connections.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire Strippers, Hand Crimping Tool, Applicator, Extraction Tool
Supplies needed:
AMPMODU MOD IV Receptacle Contacts, AMPMODU MOD IV Connector Housings, Wire (32-20 AWG), Keying Plugs
- Prepare the Wire for Crimping
Strip the wire insulation to the specified length. Refer to Figure 2 in the application specification for the correct strip length based on the wire gauge (32-20 AWG) and contact type. CAUTION: Do not nick, scrape, or cut the wire conductor during the stripping operation.
- Crimp the Receptacle Contact onto the Wire
Locate the receptacle contact in the appropriate crimping tooling (hand crimping tool or applicator) according to the instructions provided with that tooling. Terminate the wire onto the contact. CAUTION: Wire insulation shall NOT be cut or broken during the crimping operation, nor shall the insulation be crimped into the contact wire barrel.
- Visually Inspect the Crimped Contact
Examine the crimped contact to ensure it meets all quality requirements. Verify that the crimp height and length are within specifications, front and rear bellmouths are evident, the cutoff tab is correct, and burrs do not exceed limits. Ensure the insulation barrel grips the insulation firmly without cutting, and both the wire conductor and insulation are visible in the transition area. Confirm the wire barrel seam is closed with no loose strands, and there is no twist, roll, deformation, or excessive bending in the mating portion of the contact (refer to Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10).
- Insert the Crimped Contact into the Housing
Push the crimped contact into the desired cavity of the AMPMODU MOD IV housing until the locking lance fully engages. Ensure the contact is securely locked in place and the housing is not cracked or damaged (refer to Figure 10 for visual aid).
- Install Keying Plugs (Optional)
If polarization or exclusion of a specific housing position is required, install the appropriate keying plugs. Insert the keying plug directly into the housing or onto the receptacle contact as needed (refer to Figure 8).
- Extract a Contact from the Housing (Optional)
If a contact needs to be replaced or relocated, use the specified extraction tool. Refer to Section 5, TOOLING, for the correct extraction tool part number (e.g., 843473-1) and its instructional material. Carefully insert the tool to release the locking lance and remove the contact without damaging the housing or adjacent contacts.
