How to Install and Splice the FCS29N-12-3GP Opticom SC Splice Cassette

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing and splicing incoming fiber cables to the preloaded pigtails of the FCS29N-12-3GP Opticom SC Splice Cassette, and then installing the cassette into a panel or enclosure.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

#2 Phillips screwdriver, Scissors, Fiber optic cleaver, Fiber strippers, Fusion splicer, Isopropyl alcohol, Lint-free wipes

Supplies needed:

FCS29N-12-3GP Opticom SC Splice Cassette, Incoming fiber cable, Pan-Ty Cable Ties (included), 1/4 inch Phillips Screws (included, optional for Aramid yarn), Discreet Splice Sleeves (included)

  1. Access the Cassette Interior

Push down the Cover Removal Latch in the rear of the cassette and slide the cover back until the four tabs clear to remove it. If a splice tray is present, squeeze its two tabs inward to release and temporarily remove it from the Base. Carefully uncoil and set aside the fiber ends from any pigtails coiled in the splice tray. WARNING: Unmated connectors may emit invisible laser radiation. Maintain dust caps on unmated connectors.

  2. Prepare Incoming Fiber Cable for Splicing

Strip 20 inches (0.5 meters) of the outer jacket from the incoming fiber cable. Slide a splice sleeve onto each incoming fiber. Strip approximately 1.375 inches (35mm) of coating from each fiber and clean with isopropyl alcohol. Cleave each fiber so that 0.400 inches (10mm) of bare fiber extends past the coating. WARNING: Do not clean bare fiber after cleaving or allow it to contact any surfaces. CAUTION: Fiber optic cable is sensitive to excessive pulling, bending, and crushing forces.

  3. Splice and Secure Fibers

Splice the incoming fibers to the cassette's preloaded pigtails, following your splicer manufacturer's best practice instructions. Heat the splice sleeves. Route the spliced fibers into the cassette, ensuring they are located under the Base Fiber Retention Tabs. Secure the splice sleeves into the discrete Splice Sleeve Holders in the Base.

  4. Secure Incoming Cable

Secure the incoming fiber cable to the Base using two of the provided Pan-Ty Cable Ties. Trim any excess from the cable ties. Optionally, secure the incoming fiber cable's Aramid yarn to the Base using one of the provided 1/4 inch Phillips screws.

  5. Reassemble the Cassette

If a splice tray was removed, replace it into the Base, ensuring no fibers previously spliced onto the base are protruding above the Base Fiber Retention Tabs. Push until an audible 'CLICK' is heard. Re-install the cassette cover by pushing it forward until the Cover Removal Latch 'clicks' into place.

  6. Install Cassette into Panel or Enclosure

Install the cassette onto the front of a compatible panel or enclosure by snapping its two grommets into the designated holes. For rear installation, temporarily remove the bezel by pushing its latch inward, install the cassette through the rear, then re-attach the bezel and secure grommets to the front.
