How to Install and Splice Fiber Optic Cables in a Panduit FCS2ZO-12-03P Opticom SC Splice Cassette
This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing, splicing, and securing incoming fiber optic cables within the Panduit FCS2ZO-12-03P Opticom SC Splice Cassette. Ensure all safety precautions are followed during the process.
Tools needed:
#2 Phillips screwdriver, Scissors, Fiber optic cable stripper, Fiber cleaver, Fusion splicer, Isopropyl alcohol
Supplies needed:
Pan-Ty Cable Ties, 1/4 inch Phillips Screws (for Aramid yarn strain relief), Discrete Splice Sleeves, Incoming fiber optic cable, Dust caps
- Prepare the Opticom Splice Cassette
WARNING: UNMATED CONNECTORS MAY EMIT INVISIBLE LASER RADIATION. MAINTAIN DUST CAPS ON UNMATED CONNECTORS. CAUTION: Fiber optic cable is sensitive to excessive pulling, bending, and crushing forces. Consult the manufacturer’s cable specification sheet for the specific cable in use. Push down the Cover Removal Latch in the rear of the cassette and slide the Cover back until the four tabs clear to remove it from the Base. Squeeze the two tabs on the Splice Tray inward and/or pull the Base wall outward to release and temporarily remove the Splice Tray from the Base. Carefully remove the fiber ends from any pigtails coiled in the Splice Tray and set them aside.
- Prepare and Secure Incoming Fiber Cable
Strip the incoming fiber cable outer jacket by 20 inches (0.5 meters). Secure the incoming fiber cable to the Base using two provided Pan-Ty Cable Ties. Cut off any excess from the cable ties. Optionally, secure the incoming fiber cable's Aramid yarn to the Base using the provided 1/4 inch Phillips screw(s). Cut off any excess Aramid yarn. Expose all fiber ends for splicing. Slide a splice sleeve onto either the pigtail or field fiber.
- Splice the Fibers
Strip approximately 1.375 inches (35mm) of coating from each fiber (pigtail and incoming) and clean with isopropyl alcohol. Cleave the fiber so that 0.400 inches (10mm) of bare fiber extends past the fiber coating. Do not clean the bare fiber after cleaving or let it contact any surfaces. Splice all fibers according to the splicer manufacturer's best practice instructions and heat the splice sleeve(s). Route the spliced fibers into the cassette, ensuring they are located under the Base fiber retention tabs. Secure the splice sleeves into the Discrete Splice Sleeve Holders in the Base.
- Reassemble and Install the Cassette
Replace the Splice Tray into the Base, ensuring no fibers are protruding above the Base Fiber Retention Tabs. Push until an audible 'CLICK' is heard. Re-install the Cover by reversing the removal steps, pushing forward until the Cover Removal Latch 'clicks' into place. Install the cassette onto the front of compatible panels or enclosures by snapping the two grommets into the designated holes. For rear installation, temporarily remove the Bezel by pushing the Bezel latch inward. Install the cassette from the rear, then re-attach the Bezel and secure grommets to the front.
