How to Install and Configure a Panduit EL2P PDU
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Panduit Rack Power Distribution Units (PDUs) into a datacenter rack, including mounting, grounding, and connecting to a power source, as well as rotating or replacing the network controller.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
#2 Phillips screwdriver, T10 Torx screwdriver, 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench
Supplies needed:
Mounting screws, Cage nuts, Ground bonding cable, Blanking panels
- Review Safety Information
Before beginning, read all safety information in the manual, especially regarding high leakage current, overcurrent protection, proper grounding, and voltage verification. Ensure all circuit breakers are in the off position before connecting input power. This PDU is intended only for Information Technology Equipment (ITE) loads with linear/Power Factor Corrected (PFC) input current. If non-linear loads are connected, the nameplate current rating of the PDU must be reduced by a factor of 0.8.
- Prepare Rack for PDU Installation
Maintain a minimum clearance of 2 to 3 inches between the PDU chassis and the cabinet frame or side panels to ensure effective heat dissipation and avoid localized hot spots. Seal any unused rack spaces surrounding the installation with blanking panels to promote proper front-to-back airflow containment. Orient the PDU's integrated venting toward the cabinet's dedicated exhaust fans or hot aisle for premium thermal management.
- Mount Vertical PDU (if applicable)
If necessary, adjust the pre-installed mounting buttons on the back of the PDU to the desired location. Insert the mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the PDU mounting bracket in the rack. Secure the PDU using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, tightening to a recommended torque of 3.0Nm. For multiple units, install all with outlets facing the center of the rack.
- Mount Horizontal 1U/2U PDU (if applicable)
Install cage nuts at the desired U location on both the front and rear equipment rails. Screw the mounting bracket ears into the front RETMA rail surface at the U location where the cage nuts were installed. For high power PDUs, screw the pre-installed mounting bracket ears into the rear RETMA rail surface at the U location where the cage nuts were installed. Screw the mounting brackets on the front into the PDU chassis using a 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench and tighten the socket head screws.
- Ground the PDU
Connect a ground bonding cable to the external ground bonding point located on the PDU chassis. This point can typically be found on the surface with the outlets. Bond the PDU to a grounding strip or grounding bus bar, ensuring conductor sizes meet national or local electrical codes (e.g., NEC Table 250.122 or equivalent based on the country product being deployed in).
- Rotate or Replace Network Controller (Optional)
Using a T10 Torx screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the network controller. If physically rotating the controller, disconnect the ribbon cable to prevent damage, then rotate the controller to the desired orientation. If replacing the controller, disconnect the existing ribbon cable from the old controller. Carefully reconnect the ribbon cable to the controller, paying close attention to connector orientation and avoiding crimping or pinching. Mate the controller to the PDU chassis, ensuring the ribbon cable is not pinched. Reinstall the two screws using a T10 Torx screwdriver and torque them to a range of 2.2–3.1 lbf-in [0.25–0.35 N-M]. Avoid overtightening the screws, as this may result in metal deformation.
- Connect PDU to Power Source
WARNING: Ensure the feed circuit breaker for the power source is in the OFF position before proceeding. Verify that all circuit breakers on the PDU are set to the ON position. Connect the PDU to an appropriately rated branch circuit, adhering to all local and national electrical codes. Refer to the compliance label on the PDU for the input ratings. Turn the feed circuit breaker ON. Wait for the operating system to load. When complete, the Main Menu will display on the screen.
