How to Install the STX150-470PVC Cable Fitting

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the STX150-470PVC Star Teck PVC cable fitting, including cable preparation, assembly, and sealing with liquid compound.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Strap wrenches

Supplies needed:

SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (2 units), Fiber damming material, Lubricant

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Ensure installation is performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Gather all necessary tools and supplies.

  2. Prepare the Cable Armor and Jacket

Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor. Cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor strip length of 1.187 inches, as specified for STX150-470PVC.

  3. Prepare the Cable Boot

Choose a method to cut the cable boot: Method 1: Unscrew the gland nut from the body. Force the square-cut cable into the boot. Cut the boot in front of the cable. Method 2: Strip the cable jacket off the armor. Progressively cut slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide on the armor. Note: For PVC coated fittings, use strap wrenches only. Apply lubricant where indicated prior to screwing the gland nut.

  4. Insert Cable and Tighten Gland Nut

Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening. Push the cable until the cable armor hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque of 1200 IN-LBS for STX150-470PVC. Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and the cable remains centered for an optimal seal.

  5. Disassemble for Sealing Compound Application

Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8 to 3/8 inches to expose the conductor bundle. (If using shielded data cables, refer to Section 2 of the original document for additional preparation steps before proceeding).

  6. Apply Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1)

Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between the conductors and the body. Spread strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats on the body. Position the cable/fitting into a vertical position. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 sealing compound following the instructions on its package. Dispense the sealing compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level stabilizes and fills to the top. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

  7. Complete Final Assembly

Mount the hub in the desired location. After the sealing compound has solidified (approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub. Secure the assembly in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
