How to Install RAB 350 Series Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and correct installation of RAB 350 series connectors, including cable preparation, insertion, and torquing. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Torque wrench, Insulating gloves (rated to appropriate voltage)
Supplies needed:
RAB 350 series connector, Electrical cables (#12 to 350 kcmil)
- Observe Safety Precautions and Prepare for Installation
WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules. Follow standard safety practices when working on energized circuits. Wear insulating gloves rated to the appropriate voltage when installing on live conductors. If installing on an energized main, ensure tap conductors are NOT under load.
- Prepare the Rocket (if applicable)
If using 300/350 kcmil cables, remove the rocket from the connector as it is not required for these sizes. For #12 to 250 kcmil cables, cut the rocket at the marked ring. Reinsert the rocket into the connector if it was cut and is required for your specific cable size.
- Strip the Cable Insulation
Measure the required strip length by placing the cable alongside the markings on the connector's tower. Carefully strip the cable insulation to the measured length, ensuring a clean cut without damaging the conductor.
- Insert the Cable
Insert the stripped cable into the appropriate opening of the connector. For 300 to 350 kcmil cables, insert into the tower. For #12 to 250 kcmil cables, insert into the rocket. Push the cable until the end of the conductor touches the internal window.
- Torque the Connector
Remove the screw plug by pulling its tether. Using a calibrated torque wrench, tighten the connector to the specified values: 120 in-lb for #12 to #3 AWG, or 240-350 in-lb for #2 to 350 kcmil. Ensure the applied torque is within the acceptable range for your specific cable size.
- Seal the Connector
Replace the screw plug into its port. Reseal the connector by installing the attached plug. Additionally, ensure all unused cable ports on the connector are properly sealed to maintain integrity.
