This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Sweetheart FLOOD-SEAL Mechanical Connector CS 4197 ROCKET. It covers cable preparation, conductor insertion, and proper tightening procedures for a secure electrical connection.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Utility knife, Wire brush, Torque wrench, 5/16" Allen wrench, 3/8" drive ratchet with Allen adapter
Supplies needed:
Sweetheart FLOOD-SEAL Mechanical Connector CS 4197 ROCKET, Service cable, Silicone grease (included with connector), Electrical compound
- Prepare the Rocket/Cap Ring
WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and safety rules. Identify the service cable size you are using. Cut the rocket/cap ring at the tip of the arrow that corresponds to your cable size, ensuring only the correct wire range is showing.
- Prepare the Insulating Sleeve
Cut off the tip of the insulating sleeve at the arrow, making sure the correct cable size is visible on the sleeve after the cut.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Strip approximately 2 1/4 inches of insulation from the service cable conductor. Penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended to ease installation, but it is not mandatory.
- Clean and Brush Conductor
Wipe the bare cable conductor clean. Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to remove any surface oxides. Apply electrical compound to the conductor and brush it into the strands.
- Insert Conductor
Insert the prepared conductor into the outlet barrel of the connector. Ensure that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is showing outside the barrel.
- Apply Grease and Position Rocket
Apply the included silicone grease to the prepared cable. Slide the cut rocket component over the greased, prepared cable.
- Secure Rocket Sleeve
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet of the connector and onto the PVC shoulder. Continue sliding until the rocket firmly butts against the connector bar.
- Tighten Setscrews to Torque
Tighten the setscrews down onto the conductor to the specified torque. For #12 to #2 wire sizes, apply 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs). For 1/0 to 350 Kcmil wire sizes, apply 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs). A torque wrench is recommended. If a torque wrench is not available, use a 5/16” Allen wrench or a 3/8” drive ratchet with an Allen adapter. Do not use a “T” handle wrench or 1/2” drive.
