This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and correct installation of Thomas & Betts Flood-Seal Mechanical Connectors, SHC 3 through SHC 8 Series. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and safety rules.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench, 5/16 inch allen wrench, 3/8 inch drive ratchet with allen adapter
Supplies needed:
Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector (SHC 3-8 Series), Electrical cable, Silicone grease (included), Compound
- Prepare the Connector for Cable Size
Identify the cable size being used. For the feed cable, cut the SHC 3830 as shown in the product documentation. For the service cable, cut the CS4197 as shown. Cut the rocket/cap ring at the tip of the arrow to leave the correct wire range showing.
- Prepare the Cable Conductor
Strip approximately 2-1/4 inches of insulation from the cable, baring the conductor. Penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended, but not required. Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to break up surface oxides. Add compound and brush it into the strands.
- Apply Grease and Position Rocket
Wipe the cable clean. Apply the silicone grease (included in each rocket) and slide the cut rocket over the prepared cable.
- Insert Conductor and Torque Setscrews
Insert the conductor into the outlet, leaving a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor showing. Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder until the rocket butts against the connector bar. Tighten the setscrews down on the conductor to the specified torque: 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs) for #12 to #2 wire, or 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs) for 1/0 to 350 Kcmil wire. The use of a torque wrench is recommended; if not available, use a 5/16 inch allen wrench or a 3/8 inch drive ratchet with an allen adapter.
