This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Sweetheart "Flood-Seal" mechanical connector, including cable preparation, conductor insertion, and proper torque application. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and safety rules to prevent electric shock.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench (recommended), 5/16" allen wrench (alternative), 3/8" drive ratchet with allen adapter (alternative), Wire brush, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Sweetheart "Flood-Seal" Mechanical Connector (SHC 3 (S) or SHC 5 (S)), Silicone grease, Oxide inhibitor, Electrical cable
- Prepare the Connector for Cable Size
Identify the specific cable size you are using. For the feed cable, cut the SHC 3830 rocket/cap ring as indicated for the correct wire range. For the service cable, cut the CS 4197 rocket/cap ring as indicated for the correct wire range.
- Prepare the Cable
Wipe the cable clean. Apply silicone grease to the cable and slide the pre-cut rocket over it. Strip approximately 2 1/4 inches of insulation from the conductor. Penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended to ease installation, but not required.
- Clean and Treat the Conductor
Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to break up any surface oxides. After brushing, add oxide inhibitor and brush it into the conductor strands to ensure a good connection.
- Insert the Conductor
Insert the prepared conductor into the outlet barrel of the connector. Ensure that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is showing beyond the barrel opening.
- Position the Rocket Sleeve
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder of the connector. Continue sliding the sleeve until it firmly butts against the connector bar.
- Tighten the Setscrews to Torque
Tighten the setscrews down on the conductor to the specified torque. For #12 to #2 wire, apply 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs). For 1/0 to 350 Kcmil wire, apply 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs). A torque wrench is recommended; if unavailable, use a 5/16” allen wrench or a 3/8” drive ratchet with an allen adapter. Do not use a “T” handle wrench or 1/2” drive.
