Overview

The ABB RAB 4 OR Multi Seal Insulated Bus Connector is a four-conductor, aluminum-insulated bus connector engineered for reliable transitions between #12 solid conductors and 350 kcmil conductors in both aluminum and copper applications. This connector features a multi-seal design that provides environmental protection against moisture, dust, and corrosion, ensuring long-term reliability in industrial and commercial electrical systems. The outward rocket configuration enables efficient conductor alignment and secure termination, reducing installation time while improving system integrity. Typical applications include power distribution panels, motor control centers, and renewable energy systems where multiple conductors must be joined with insulation integrity. The RAB 4 OR accommodates a wide range of wire sizes within its specified range and is rated for use with both aluminum and copper conductors. Part of ABB’s Installation Products line, this connector delivers dependable electrical connection solutions in demanding environments. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use when installed according to ABB’s guidelines and applicable electrical codes. The multi-seal insulation system maintains dielectric strength and prevents moisture ingress, critical for maintaining performance in harsh conditions. The connector’s design allows for direct burial applications where environmental sealing is essential, and its aluminum construction ensures compatibility with aluminum conductors while providing corrosion resistance. The outward rocket configuration simplifies alignment of multiple conductors, reducing the risk of improper installation and enhancing overall system reliability.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Wire strippers, Insulating gloves (rated to appropriate voltage)

Supplies needed:

RAB 350 OR Series Connector, Electrical cable

  1. Prepare the Connector Rocket

Prepare the connector rocket by cutting it at the marked ring if using #12 to 250 kcmil cable. For 300 to 350 kcmil cable, completely remove the rocket. Ensure all unused cable ports are sealed.

  2. Prepare the Cable Insulation

Measure the required strip length by placing the cable alongside the marking on the connector tower. Strip the cable insulation to the measured length and pencil the insulation. When reinstalling a cable, it must be of the same size or larger than the one removed.

  3. Insert Cable into Assembly

Insert the prepared cable directly into the rocket or RAB assembly. If needed, loosen the hex bolt to facilitate cable insertion. If installing on an energized main, ensure tap conductors are NOT UNDER LOAD.

  4. Seat the Cable Conductor

Continue inserting the cable into either the tower (for 300 to 350 kcmil) or the rocket (for #12 to 250 kcmil) until the end of the conductor is visible and touches the window.

  5. Remove Screw Plug

Remove the screw plug from the connector by pulling its tether.

  6. Torque the Connector

Using a wrench, torque the connector to the specified values: 120 in-lb for #12 to #3 AWG cables, and 240 in-lb for #2 AWG to 350 kcmil cables. Refer to the inside of the tether for exact torque specifications.

  7. Replace Screw Plug

Replace the screw plug into the connector opening.

  8. Verify Final Assembly

Inspect the finished assembly to ensure the cable is securely connected and the screw plug is properly replaced. Ensure all unused cable ports are sealed.
