How to Install the R2T28J2 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the indoor/outdoor installation of the R2T28J2 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables, including cable preparation, lug installation, and termination sealing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Vinyl tape or binding wire, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (optional), Gloves
Supplies needed:
Silicone Rubber Termination (kit content), Lubricant (kit content), Grey Silicone Rubber Tape (kit content), Sealing Mastic (kit content), Connector or Lug, Cable, System ground connection, Silicone grease
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Verify that the cable size fits within the kit's specified range and that all kit contents are complete and undamaged. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length, allowing sufficient neutral wire length for the grounding connection. Prepare the cable by stripping the jacket, neutral wires, semi-con, and insulation according to the dimensions provided in the instructions (for R2T28J2, 'A' is 10.5 inches or 270mm for insulation preparation). Allow additional exposed conductor distance for aluminum lug crimping growth. Carefully wrap the first band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, using a 50% stretch. Position it precisely as it serves as a marker. Bend the neutral wires back over the mastic and secure them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the first mastic, again using a 50% stretch. Cut both mastic bands flush without overlapping. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension from the jacket end.
- Install the Terminal Lug or Connector
If using a lug that will not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the appropriate copper or aluminum connector/lug onto the prepared conductor and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions. Do not crimp the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings. Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-con insulation shield. If necessary, use only 120-grit or finer aluminum oxide abrasive on the insulation, being careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter. Do not use abrasive on the semi-con insulation shield.
- Install and Seal the Termination Body
IMPORTANT: Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape (from the kit) around the base of the terminal lug. Adjust the tape layers based on the barrel diameter relative to the cable primary insulation. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off (this grease is for filling, not lubrication). For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom of the termination. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning the terminator with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully begin to remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body is butted up to the leading edge of the mastic seal, and avoid pushing or pulling the termination assembly while removing the core. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (do not lubricate skirt tabs). Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, complete the lug area moisture seal by overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them securely to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
