How to Install the R2T28J4 Ranger 2 Cable Termination

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, installing the lug or connector, cleaning the insulation, and properly installing the R2T28J4 Ranger 2 Cable Termination for indoor/outdoor applications. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Cutting tool

Supplies needed:

Silicone Rubber Termination, Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic, Gloves, Connector or lug, Cable Support Bracket (optional), Vinyl tape, Binding wire (optional), Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed)

  1. Verify Cable and Kit Compatibility

Check that the cable size falls within the kit's specified range using the Termination Selection Chart. Inspect all kit components for completeness, damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating parts. Safety Warning: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Position the cable and cut it to the required length, ensuring sufficient neutral wire length for the grounding connection. Strip the cable jacket and semi-con insulation according to the dimensions provided in Table 1 and the figures, allowing for terminal lug depth and conductor growth during crimping. Wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching it 50%. Cut the mastic flush without overlapping. Bend the neutral wires back over the mastic, press them in, and secure them to the cable jacket 4-6" (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second band of sealing mastic over the neutral wires and the first mastic band, stretching it 50% and cutting it flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension.

  3. Install the Lug or Connector

If using a lug that does not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, leaving the last 1/4" to 3/8" uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings after crimping.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, taking care not to let the solvent touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, not the semi-con shield. Ensure the cable insulation diameter is not reduced below the kit's allowed range.

  5. Install the Termination Body

Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug. Adjust layers based on barrel diameter relative to cable primary insulation. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-con insulation shield to fill the step at the cut-off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise from the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination assembly during core removal.

  6. Complete Termination Sealing and Grounding

Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1" and extending the tape over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them securely to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5".
