How to Install 15kV & 28kV Ranger 2 Silicone Rubber Termination
Complete installation guide for the 15kV & 28kV Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shield cables. Includes cable preparation, ground braid installation, and termination setup. Ensure apparatus is de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Approved solvent, Cleaning pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed)
Supplies needed:
Silicone Rubber Termination, Silicone Lubricant (Grease), Gray Silicone Rubber Electrical Tape, Constant Force Spring, Preformed Ground Braid, Sealing Mastic, Copper Foil Tape, Gloves, Vinyl Tape, Terminal Lug/Connector
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Ensure the cable size fits the termination. Train the cable into position and cut to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, semi-con, and insulation according to the specified dimensions, allowing for terminal lug depth and growth. Secure the tape shield edge with copper foil tape.
- Install the Ground Braid Assembly
Wrap one band of mastic 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end. Position the preformed ground braid with the solder block centered over the mastic and secure it with vinyl tape, pressing the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield, trim excess, and secure it with the constant force spring, cinching it tightly and securing with vinyl tape.
- Crimp the Terminal Lug or Connector
Verify the termination assembly fits over the selected lug; if not, slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug. Position the lug or connector and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions, leaving the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring no solvent touches the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-con shield, and do not reduce the cable insulation diameter.
- Install the Silicone Rubber Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-con insulation shield to fill the step. Pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body remains butted against the mastic seal without pushing or pulling.
- Complete Moisture Seal and Connect Ground
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
