How to Install R2T15/28M Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on Tape Shielded Cables
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2T15/28M Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, cleaning, and final termination placement.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire Strippers, Crimping Tool
Supplies needed:
R2T15/28M Termination Kit (includes termination, lubricant, silicone rubber tape, constant force spring, preformed ground braid, sealing mastic, copper foil tape, gloves), Terminal Lug or Connector, Approved Solvent, Vinyl Tape, Aluminum Oxide Abrasive (120 grit or finer, if needed)
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Check that the cable size fits within the termination range. Train the cable into position and cut to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket and semi-con insulation shield according to the specified dimensions, allowing for terminal lug depth and aluminum lug growth. Secure the tape shield edge with a single wrap of supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.
- Install the Ground Braid Assembly
Wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching 50%. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and the first mastic, maintaining the 1/4 inch dimension. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield once, trim excess, and secure it with the constant force spring, wrapping in the same direction. Cinch the spring and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape. If using cloth or paper semi-con insulation shield, overwrap it with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape.
- Attach the Terminal Lug or Connector
First, verify the termination assembly fits over your selected lug. If not, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only, avoiding the semi-con shield. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowance.
- Install and Seal the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is smaller than the cable primary insulation, build up the tape band to equal the insulation diameter. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it's flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body, not the core, is butted against the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the assembly during core removal. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (avoid skirt tabs). Fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal with remaining silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
