How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminator

A comprehensive guide for installing the 15kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminator on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables for indoor applications only. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire cutters, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Clean rags or wipes

Supplies needed:

15kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminator kit (Silicone Rubber Termination, Lubricant, Gloves), Approved solvent, Elastimold copper or aluminum lug/connector (or compatible), Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed), Cable Support Bracket (optional)

  1. Prepare the Cable

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. Verify that the cable size fits within the kit's specified range. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length, allowing sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, neutral wires, and semi-con insulation shield to the specified dimensions (e.g., 9-1/2 inches for the cable jacket, 1-1/2 inches for neutral wires, and specific lengths for semi-con based on cable size). Bend the neutral wires back as instructed.

  2. Install the Lug or Connector

If using a lug or connector that will not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector or lug and crimp it onto the cable conductor according to the manufacturer's directions. Ensure you do not crimp the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.

  3. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, being careful not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-con shield, and ensure the cable insulation diameter is not reduced below the kit's allowed range.

  4. Install the Termination Body

Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-con insulation shield; this grease is crucial for filling the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the terminator body onto the cable, aligning its skirt with the edge of the cable jacket. Carefully begin to remove the core by rotating the lead counter-clockwise as you pull. Recheck the terminator's position and continue removing the core. Do not push or pull on the terminator assembly while removing the core.

  5. Connect Neutral Wires to Ground

Twist the concentric neutral wires together firmly. Connect these twisted neutral wires securely to the system ground to ensure proper electrical safety and operation.
