Overview

This termination supports cable insulation diameters from 0.84 to 1.38 inches, covering common industrial and utility applications including switchgear, motor control centers, and distribution panels. The termination features an aluminum 2-hole spade terminal rated for #2 AWG through 1250 kcmil conductors, supporting both stranded/compressed (4/0) and compact/solid (250 kcmil) configurations. The design simplifies installation with pre-engineered components, reducing field assembly time while maintaining consistent electrical performance. The non-tracking silicone housing provides superior memory and weathering characteristics, ensuring long-term reliability in indoor environments. Key specifications include a maximum design voltage to ground of 9.5 kV, a coronal extinction voltage of 13 kV (≤ 3pC), and a lightning impulse withstand rating of 110 kV crest. The termination meets IEEE 48 standards and accommodates popular XLP and EPR cable types. Optional silicone sleeves are available for increased creepage or wildlife protection. Installation is field-removable with common procedures, and the unit installs in restricted spaces or permits free hanging applications. Three sizes cover the entire cable range from #2 AWG to 1250 kcmil, with optional connectors including copper stem, one-hole, and two-hole spade configurations. Ambient temperature range is -22 to +149 °F (-30 to +65 °C), with a power system frequency range of 48 to 62 Hz. The termination is designed for altitudes up to 3300 feet (1005 m) and includes installation instructions (IS-1135 for R2IT15M).

How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cables

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables for indoor applications.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable preparation tools, Crimping tool, Solvent applicator pads, Abrasive (aluminum oxide, grit 120 or finer), Utility knife or scissors

Supplies needed:

15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Preformed Ground Braid, Constant Force Spring, Silicone Lubricant, Copper Foil Tape, Vinyl Tape, Cable connector/lug, Cleaning solvent, Safety gloves

  1. De-energize and Prepare Cable

WARNING: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Failure to do so will result in serious or fatal injury. Verify the cable size is compatible with the termination kit using the provided chart. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length, allowing for terminal lug depth and growth allowance. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket (9-1/4" / 235mm), tape shield (3/4" / 19mm), and semi-conductive layer (3/4" / 19mm exposed), according to the specified dimensions. Secure the edge of the tape shield with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.

  2. Install Ground Braid

Wrap one band of vinyl tape around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end; this serves as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape marker. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using additional vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original marker and ground braid solder block, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield for one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring, wrapping the spring in the same direction as the braid. Cinch the spring after the final winding. Secure the constant force spring with two wraps of vinyl tape.

  3. Install Lug or Connector

Before crimping, check that the termination assembly will fit over the selected lug. If not, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not crimp the last 3/8" to 1/2" of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges after crimping.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with solvent-saturated pads. WARNING: Do not allow the solvent to touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, not on the semi-conductive shield. Ensure that the cable insulation diameter is not reduced below the kit's specifications.

  5. Install and Ground Termination

Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield to fill the step at the cut-off point. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the termination's core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination's position and continue removing the core. WARNING: Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core. Connect the ground braid securely to the system ground.
