How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination (Tape Shielded Cable)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination (R2IT15M series) for indoor applications on tape shielded cables. Note: This indoor kit does not restore a moisture-resistant seal to the cable termination; use indoor/outdoor kits if moisture resistance is required. It covers cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, cleaning, and termination placement.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Solvent saturated pads, Abrasive (aluminum oxide, grit 120 or finer, optional), Safety gloves
Supplies needed:
15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination kit (R2IT15M series), Preformed Ground Braid, Constant Force Spring, Silicone Lubricant, Copper Foil Tape, Vinyl Tape, Terminal Lug or Connector (appropriate for cable), Cleaning solvent
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Cable
WARNING: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage and compatibility. Check cable size against the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into position and cut to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket 9-1/4" (235mm) and allowing for 1-1/2" (38mm) depth of the terminal lug plus any growth allowance for aluminum lugs (1/4" to 3/4" depending on conductor size). To prevent the tape shield from unrolling, secure its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape.
- Install Ground Braid
Wrap one band of vinyl tape around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end; this serves as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape marker. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original marker and ground braid solder block, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield for one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring, wrapping the spring in the same direction as the ground braid. Cinch the spring after the final winding and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape. If the cable has a cloth or paper semi-conductive insulation shield, overwrap it with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape (e.g., Scotcht No. 13).
- Install Terminal Lug or Connector
Verify that the termination assembly will fit over your selected lug. If it does not, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8" to 1/2" of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with solvent-saturated pads, taking care not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use it only on the insulation, not on the semi-conductive insulation shield. Use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's specifications.
- Install and Ground the Termination
Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to cover the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield; this silicone fills the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination's position and continue to remove the core, ensuring not to push or pull on the termination assembly during this process. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground.
