How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2IT15M1-N0260 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shield, wire shield, or UniShield cables for indoor applications. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutter, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Solvent saturated pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer), Vinyl electrical tape

Supplies needed:

R2IT15M1-N0260 Termination Kit (includes Silicone Rubber Termination, Preformed Ground Braid, Constant Force Spring, Lubricant, Copper Foil Tape, Gloves), Cable connector or lug (compatible with cable and termination), Semi-conductive rubber tape (e.g., Scotch No. 13, if cable has cloth or paper semi-con shield)

  1. Observe Safety Precautions and Inspect Components

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. WARNING: This 15kV indoor kit does not restore a moisture-resistant seal to cable termination; use indoor/outdoor kits if moisture resistance is required. Inspect all kit components for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating parts. Ensure all required tools and supplies are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Verify the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, semi-conductive layer, and insulation according to the dimensions provided in the instructions (e.g., 9-1/4 inches (235mm) jacket removal, allowing for terminal lug depth and aluminum lug growth allowance). For tape shield cables, prevent the tape shield from unrolling by securing its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape. If the cable has a cloth or paper semi-conductive insulation shield, overwrap it with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape (e.g., Scotch No. 13).

  3. Install the Ground Braid

Wrap one band of vinyl tape around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end to serve as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the cable shield (tape shield, wire shield, or UniShield wires) and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape marker. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original tape marker and ground braid solder block, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable shield for one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Wrap the spring in the same direction as the ground braid and cinch it after the final winding. Secure the constant force spring with two wraps of vinyl tape.

  4. Install the Lug or Connector

Before crimping, check that the termination assembly (with its core) will fit over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug; do not remove the core at this time. Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not crimp the last 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges after crimping.

  5. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with solvent-saturated pads, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only. Do not use abrasive on the semi-conductive insulation shield, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below that allowed by the kit.

  6. Install the Termination Body and Connect Ground

Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to cover the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield; this silicone fills the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable. Align the termination's edge (or skirt for wire shield) with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the termination core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination position and continue removing the core. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground.
