Overview

The ABB Ranger2 Termination (SKU: R2IT15M1-H0240) is a Type Indoor termination engineered for 15kV cable systems in utility, industrial, and commercial power distribution. This termination supports tape shield, wire shield, or unshielded cables with insulation diameters from 0.64 inch to 1.12 inch, accommodating stranded or compressed conductors from 1/0 AWG to 2/0 AWG, including 240-strand configurations. The aluminum 1-hole spade connector is rated for #2-500 kcmil, ensuring secure, high-current connections in medium-voltage applications. Designed for indoor installations, the Ranger2 termination leverages shrink-fit technology to cover the widest range of cable sizes with minimal model variation. Three sizes handle cables from #2 AWG to 1250 kcmil, including popular XLP and EPR cable types. The non-tracking silicone housing delivers superior memory and weathering resistance, while the field-removable center core simplifies installation and maintenance. Optional insulating silicone sleeves provide additional creepage distance and wildlife protection when required. Key applications include substation terminations, switchgear connections, and indoor cable terminations in medium-voltage switchboards. The compact footprint and standardized connector interface reduce installation time and downtime during upgrades or repairs. With a maximum design voltage to ground of 9.5 kV, lightning impulse withstand of 110 kV crest, and a 50 kV 1-minute dry withstand rating, the Ranger2 termination meets IEEE 48 standards for reliable long-term service in controlled indoor environments. Ambient operating temperatures range from -22°F to +149°F (-30°C to +65°C), with altitude limits up to 3,300 feet (1,005 meters).
  • Supports 15kV indoor cable systems with insulation diameters from 0.64" to 1.12"

How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination (R2IT15M)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the indoor installation of the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination (R2IT15M) on tape-shielded cables. It is crucial to de-energize all apparatus and adhere to high-voltage safety practices. Note that this indoor kit does not provide a moisture-resistant seal; use indoor/outdoor kits if moisture resistance is required.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tools, Crimping tool, Measuring tape or ruler, Marker, Cleaning pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, optional)

Supplies needed:

R2IT15M 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination Kit (includes: Silicone Rubber Termination, Preformed Ground Braid, Constant Force Spring, Lubricant, Copper Foil Tape, Gloves), Vinyl electrical tape, Compatible terminal lug or connector, Cable cleaning solvent

  1. Prepare the Cable

Verify the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length for installation. Prepare the cable according to the provided dimensions, ensuring to account for the depth of the terminal lug and any growth allowance for aluminum lugs. Secure the edge of the tape shield with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.

  2. Install the Ground Braid

Wrap one band of vinyl tape around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end; this serves as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape marker. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original marker and ground braid solder block, carefully maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield for one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring, wrapping the spring in the same direction as the ground braid. Cinch (tighten) the spring after the final winding. Secure the spring with two wraps of vinyl tape. For cables with cloth or paper semi-conductive shields, overwrap the shield with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape.

  3. Install the Terminal Lug or Connector

Check that the termination assembly can fit over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not crimp the last 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with solvent-saturated pads, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use it only on the insulation, not on the semi-conductive insulation shield. Use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed specifications.

  5. Install the Termination Body

Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease (lubricant) to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination position and continue to remove the core. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground.
