How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminator (Indoor)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 15kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminator for indoor applications on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer, optional)
Supplies needed:
Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Silicone grease, Gloves, Elastimold copper or aluminum lug/connector, Vinyl tape, Grounding wire/connector, Cable Support Bracket (optional)
- Prepare the Cable
WARNING: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Check that the cable size fits within the kit's specified range. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length, ensuring sufficient neutral wire length for the grounding connection. Prepare the cable using the specified dimensions, allowing for the terminal lug depth and additional exposed conductor distance for aluminum lugs. Bend the neutral wires back and secure them, typically with vinyl tape.
- Install the Lug or Connector
If using a lug that will not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings after crimping.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with an approved solvent. Do not allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-con insulation shield. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below that allowed by the kit.
- Install the Termination Body
Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease; this fills the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the terminator body onto the cable, aligning its skirt with the edge of the cable jacket. Carefully begin to remove the internal core by rotating it counter-clockwise as you pull. Recheck the terminator's position and continue to remove the core. Do not push or pull on the terminator assembly while removing the core.
- Connect to System Ground
Twist the concentric neutral wires together. Securely connect the twisted neutral wires to the system ground. Ensure all connections are tight and secure before energizing the circuit.
