How to Install Elastimold Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 655/675LR and K655/K675LR deadbreak elbow connectors on high voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable preparation tools, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Suitable grounding connector
Supplies needed:
Elastimold 655/675LR or K655/K675LR elbow connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug (if applicable), Lubricant (silicone), Threaded stud (if mating part not equipped), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent for grounding), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket)
- De-energize Apparatus and Prepare Cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Failure to follow this instruction will result in serious or fatal injury. Assemble the cable in its final position with sufficient slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24 inches (610mm) and prepare the cable by removing the outer jacket and shield as per cable type, referring to specific diagrams or instructions for precise dimensions.
- Install Cable Adapter and Compression Lug
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the tape marker's edge. Remove protruding cable insulation, ensuring the exposed conductor length is between 4-1/4 inches and 4-9/16 inches (108mm-116mm). Insert the conductor fully into the compression lug (wire brush aluminum conductors first). Crimp the lug according to its instructions, then wipe away excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the lug end to the cable adapter is 6-3/8 inches to 7-1/8 inches (162mm-181mm) after crimping.
- Install Elbow and Connect to Mating Product
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further, ensuring the adapter remains flush with the tape marker. Remove the tape marker. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the supplied threaded stud into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the provided lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. For the opposite end, clean and lubricate the mating part, insert it into the elbow, engage threads, hand tighten, and torque as per its instructions. WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Failure to observe this warning can lead to serious or fatal injury.
- Ground the Cable Shield and Perform Voltage Test
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded, either via a grounding device or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable. To perform a voltage test, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury.
