How to Install Elastimold 655/675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 655/675LR and K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for fully shielded, submersible high voltage cable connections to apparatus or for splicing/tapping systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Torque wrench (for mating parts)
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug (optional), Lubricant (silicone), Stud prepack (if mating part not equipped), Crimp chart, Grounding wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable grounding connector, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket)
- De-energize Apparatus and Prepare Cable
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean and Prepare Cable Insulation
Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable's semi-con shield and insulation according to the specific cable type (jacketed, non-jacketed, Unishield, etc.) and provided diagrams. Refer to separate instructions for specific grounding devices or cable shield adapters.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Lug
Remove the protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor length must be 4-1/4” to 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm). Fully insert the conductor into the compression lug (wire brush aluminum conductors immediately before insertion). Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be less than 6-3/8”). Crimp the lug per its instructions. Wipe off excess inhibitor. The distance from the lug end to the cable adapter must be 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm) after crimping.
- Install Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it lacks a stud. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud.
- Connect Second Mating Part (if applicable)
If connecting to a second mating part, clean and lubricate its surface. Insert this mating part into the opposite end of the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions. CAUTION: For 600amp L-Kits, ensure all components are tightened to specified torque.
- Install Insulating Plug or Voltage Detection Cap
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a grounding wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded either via a grounding device (follow its instructions) or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test
Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the meter's manufacturer directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap's inner surface with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
