How to Install 15/25/35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well Products

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 15/25/35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well products. It covers preparation, connection, torque tightening, and voltage testing procedures for these high-voltage power distribution accessories.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench, Hotstick, Suitable capacitive voltage sensing device

Supplies needed:

Deadbreak Plug or Well product, Lubricant (supplied with product), Elbow or Bushing Extension (mating part), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone lubricant (for test point cap)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Inspect Parts

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all parts for damage, verify their rating, and confirm compatibility with mating parts. If the product came with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing. Check the package contents for completeness and ensure all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare Plug/Well and Mating Part

Remove any protective caps from the plug or well product. If the 600amp mating interface is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud (typically supplied with the elbow or bushing extension) into the 600amp interface on the plug or well. Lubricate both the elbow (or bushing extension) and its mating part thoroughly with the lubricant supplied. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE with other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the products. Ensure all surfaces of the elbow and mating parts remain clean.

  3. Connect Plug/Well to Elbow/Bushing Extension

Carefully push the plug or well into the elbow or bushing extension. Ensure the components align correctly and engage the threads as you push them together.

  4. Torque Tighten the Connection

Use a torque wrench to tighten the connection. If installing an Insulating Plug, apply 50 to 60 foot-pounds of torque. If installing a Connector Plug, Tap Plug, or Tap Well, use a torque wrench with an ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench and tighten to an indicated torque of 40 to 48 foot-pounds. The indicated torque is not the actual torque applied in this specific case.

  5. Install Voltage Detection Cap (if applicable)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps securely into place.

  6. Perform Voltage Test

To test for voltage, first remove the test point cap using a hotstick. PEEL OFF THE CAP AT AN ANGLE rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is NOT directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device specifically designed for separable connectors with capacitive test points, following its manufacturer’s directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, or incorrect equipment can cause a false 'no voltage' indication. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
