How to Install 15/25/35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well Products
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 15/25/35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well products. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning any work.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench (for specific plugs), Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Stud (if mating interface not equipped), Silicone lubricant
- De-energize and Inspect Components
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Inspect the plug or well, lubricant, and mating parts (elbow or bushing extension) for any damage, correct rating, and compatibility. If the product is supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Prepare and Lubricate Components
Remove any protective caps from the plug or well product. If the 600 amp mating interface is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the supplied stud into the 600 amp interface on the plug or well. Lubricate both the elbow and its mating part thoroughly with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute, as other lubricants may be harmful. Ensure all surfaces remain clean during this process.
- Connect Plug or Well
Carefully push the plug or well into the elbow or bushing extension. Ensure the components align correctly and engage the threads fully.
- Apply Specified Torque
Use a torque wrench to tighten the connection. For an insulating plug, apply 50 to 60 foot-pounds of torque. For a connector plug, tap plug, or tap well, use an ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench with the torque wrench, applying an indicated torque of 40 to 48 foot-pounds. Refer to special instructions IS-0915 for K651 and 750 rubber connecting plugs.
- Install Voltage Detection Cap (If Applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap with silicone lubricant. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps securely into place.
- Conduct Voltage Detection
Remove the test point cap using a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury.
- Secure Voltage Test Point Cap
After voltage detection has been made, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the test point cap with silicone lubricant. Replace the cap onto the test point, ensuring it is securely seated.
