How to Install the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of the 600/900 series deadbreak connecting plug, an accessory for power distribution systems. It covers stud installation, lubrication, connection, and grounding.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, 3/8 inch hex bit socket (or 600ATM)
Supplies needed:
Connecting Plug, Lubricant (supplied), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire (or equivalent)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Check
Before starting, ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if submerging or energizing the circuit. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Install the Mating Stud (If Required)
If the mating plug device is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud into the mating plug device. Ensure the stud is threaded in until the start of the flats are below the contact surface.
- Clean and Lubricate Components
Clean both the connecting plug and its mating part as indicated in the documentation. Lubricate all specified surfaces, including the connecting plug, stud, and the mating part (elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) with the supplied lubricant only. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the products. Keep all surfaces clean during this process.
- Connect and Torque the Plug
Push the connecting plug firmly into the elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module until the threads engage. Hold the contact of the connecting plug against the contact surface of the mating part. Using a torque wrench with a 600ATM or a 3/8-inch hex bit socket, tighten the connection to exert 50 to 60 foot-pounds (68 to 81 newton-meters) of torque.
- Ground the Connecting Plug (If Applicable)
If applicable, insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the connecting plug. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect the other end of this wire securely to ground.
