What is the K656I separable joint used for?
The K656I separable "I" joint connects cables in a disconnectable 2-way joint. It is suitable for small vaults, manholes, and direct-buried applications due to its compact size.
What material is the K656I joint made from?
The joint is made from 100% peroxide cured EPDM molded rubber, and is fully shielded and fully submersible.
How do I select the correct cable insulation code?
Determine the cable's insulation diameter in inches or mm, then select the insulation letter code from the W table that best straddles this diameter.
How do I order a cable shield grounding kit?
To include a cable shield grounding kit or cable jacket sealing kit, you need to add a suffix symbol to the catalog number.
What is included in a complete K656I joint package?
A complete package includes an insulated bus bar, straight receptacle housing, retaining rings, cable size adapters, lugs, bolts, and washers.
Are the K656I joint components reusable?
Yes, the components of the K656I joint are reusable, which helps reduce inventory and other costs.
Does the K656I joint have a test point?
Yes, the K656I separable straight joint includes an integral capacitive test point.
What standard does the K656I joint meet?
The K656I separable straight joint meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386, Latest Revision.
What is the momentary current rating?
The momentary current rating for both 15kV and 25kV voltage classes is 25kA Sym for 10 Cycles.
What is the continuous current rating?
The continuous current rating for both 15kV and 25kV voltage classes is 600 Amps.
How to Install K656 Deadbreak Receptacles
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of one leg of K656CY, K656CH, or K656I Deadbreak Receptacles, designed for splicing and tapping solid dielectric cables rated for 600A at 15kV and 25kV.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16 inch socket, Wire brush (for aluminum cable), Assembly tool (650ATY or 600RRT), Rag, Approved safety solvent
Supplies needed:
Receptacle housings, Cable adapters, Center section (I, Wye, or H), Aluminum holding collars, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Hex-head bolts, Crimp connectors, Belleville washers, Flat washers, Nylon venting rod, No. 14 AWG copper wire (for grounding), Tape (for markers and support)
- Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. Inspect all receptacle components for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Confirm all package contents are complete and undamaged, and check threads for proper fit.
- Clean Cable Jacket and Position Housing
Wipe the outer cable jacket clean for a distance of 38 inches (96.5 cm) from the end. Cut the cable end squarely. If using an ECS grounding device, slide its tube onto the cable 38 inches. Then, slide the receptacle housing onto the cable 30 inches (76.2 cm).
- Prepare Cable End (Type-Specific)
Refer to the special cable preparation supplement (Part A for Jacketed Concentric Neutral or Part B for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded) for specific instructions. This involves removing the outer jacket and semi-con shield to specified lengths, creating a tape marker, beveling the insulation, and thoroughly cleaning the insulation. Lubricate the cable and the inside of the cable adapter, then slide the adapter onto the cable until flush with the tape marker.
- Trim Insulation and Assemble Retaining Ring
Remove any protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor measures 4 3/4 to 5 inches (12.1-12.7 cm). Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor, snug it firmly against the cable adapter, and hand-tighten the socket head screw. Confirm the exposed conductor now measures 4 3/8 to 4 3/4 inches (11.1-12.1 cm).
- Install and Crimp Connector
Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the crimp connector. Confirm bolt holes align with the mating part. Crimp the connector following the provided instructions, rotating each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. Verify the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar is 6 3/4 to 7 inches (17.1-17.8 cm).
- Assemble and Torque Splice Bolts
Assemble the washers and bolt: flat washer against the spade contact, then the Belleville washer (concave side down), followed by the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 inch socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs. Do not move or reposition any part after tightening.
- Lubricate and Position Receptacle Housing
Apply the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter, the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the nylon venting rod.
- Engage Receptacle Housing with Assembly Tool
Attach either the 650ATY or 600RRT assembly tool. Use the tool to slowly slide the receptacle housing completely over the splice section. Once fully engaged, remove the nylon venting rod. WARNING: Do not place hands on the threaded rod or guide shaft if using the 600RRT tool.
- Complete Grounding
If an ECS grounding device is used, complete its installation according to its specific instructions. Connect a short length of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eyes of the housings. Make a small loop and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye, and connect to ground.
