How to Install the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables to other Elastimold products or electrical apparatus. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Rag
Supplies needed:
151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Approved solvent, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Elastimold bail
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Check
Before starting, de-energize all apparatus. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Failure to follow instructions can result in serious injury.
- Prepare Cable Jacket (Concentric Neutral or Tape Shield)
For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the end, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the end, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the cable end.
- Remove Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch (or 1 3/4 inches to 1 7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 comp./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel which contains inhibitor.
- Crimp the Conductor Contact
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring the conductor remains fully seated. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare and Clean Insulation
Remove the semi-conductive shield 7 9/16 inches to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut, avoiding nicks to the insulation. Pencil insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and insulation thoroughly with an approved solvent, wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue.
- Lubricate the Cable and Receptacle
Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product or its mating product.
- Insert Cable into Receptacle Housing
Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If the receptacle is not to be immediately connected, replace the protective cover (note: shipping cover offers dirt protection only, it is not an insulating device).
- Connect to a Mating Plug
To connect to a mating plug, first lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), ensuring the rod is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible, then pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an Elastimold bail.
- Ground the Cable
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
