This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of K656DLR series elbow connectors, including cable preparation, bolt connector assembly, and connection to mating apparatus.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable cutter, Wire strippers, Knife, Measuring tape, Ruler, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Torque wrench, Deburring tool, High voltage insulated hot stick, Direct Voltage Test Port Adapter (e.g., 200TC-1, 200TC-2, 200TC-4), Voltage Meter/Indicator (e.g., HD Electric Co. MARK I, ROSS METER Hi-ZVM 25SE-A/VM25B, CHANCE Auto-Ranging Voltage Indicator)
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector, Cable adapter, Bolt connector, Insulating plug (if used), Lubricant, Threaded stud (if mating part not equipped), Inhibitor (for aluminum conductors), Grounding wire (No. 14 AWG Copper or equivalent), Suitable connector (for grounding), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), Cleaning agent, Tape marker
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all components of the elbow connector kit for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the package contents are complete.
- Prepare Cable for Installation
Assemble the cable in its final position, ensuring sufficient slack for elbow removal. If using concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.
- Perform Cable Preparation and Install Cable Adapter
Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to its type (jacketed, non-jacketed, Unishield, etc.), referring to Table 1 for specific lengths. Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the cable insulation shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Verify cable insulation and bare conductor lengths against Table 2; if not met, redo the assembly.
- Install Bolt Connector
Install the conductor into the bolt connector, carefully following the manufacturer's instructions for shearing off the bolt heads, starting with the bolt from the open end. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before installation and wipe off any excess inhibitor from the bolted connector and cable adapter surface. Verify the distance from the end of the bolted connector to the cable adapter against Table 3. Remove any sharp edges from the bolted connector to prevent damage to the elbow.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Apparatus
Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the supplied threaded stud into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud.
- Connect Opposite End (if applicable) and Ground Cable Shield
If connecting the opposite end, clean and lubricate its mating part, insert it into the elbow, engage threads, hand tighten, and torque according to its instructions. If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place on the elbow, pushing down hard until it snaps into place. Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper (or equivalent) wire through the grounding eye, twist to form a small loop, and connect to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded as per instructions or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Direct Voltage Test
Perform a direct voltage test using an appropriate direct voltage test port adapter and meter (e.g., 200TC-1, 200TC-2, 200TC-4). Refer to the separate operating instructions for the test adapter and meter. DANGER: Insertion of any object, other than the appropriate direct voltage test port adapter and meter, into the direct test port or in close proximity to it can result in electric shock which will cause serious or fatal injury.
