How to Install and Connect K656DLR-N0410 Direct Test Elbow Connectors
Install, prepare, and connect the K656/K656DLR direct test elbow connector on compatible high-voltage cable and mating apparatus. Follow all de-energized-work and grounding requirements before assembly or testing.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Cable cutter, Wire brush, Crimping tool, High-voltage insulated hot stick, Appropriate torque tool, Cleaning cloths
Supplies needed:
K656DLR elbow connector kit, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug or mating connector parts, Lubricant, Stud prepack, Ground wire (No. 14 AWG copper or equivalent), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape marker/retainer, Grounding device or alternate grounding materials
- Verify safety and inspect all parts
De-energize all apparatus before starting. Inspect the connector kit, cable, and mating parts for damage, rating, and compatibility, and read the full instructions before assembly. Remove any shipping covers and replace them with the proper HV insulated cap or connector before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Position and prepare the cable
Position the cable in its final location with enough slack to remove the elbows later. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires, then cut the cable 1 3/4 in. (45 mm) from the center line of the mating product. Clean the outer cable surface for 24 in. (610 mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.
- Remove jacket and shield layers as required
Prepare the cable according to its construction. Remove the outer jacket, fold back shield wires, or remove the specified shield type to the listed dimensions. If using a 20MA/21MA grounding device, 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, UNISHIELD cable, or lead sheath cable, follow the separate instructions supplied with those products. Do not cut or nick the cable insulation.
- Install the cable adapter
Bevel the cable insulation end at a 45-degree angle about 1/4 in. (6 mm) back. Clean and lubricate the insulation, working toward the semi-con shield, then install the cable adapter small end first until it is flush with the tape marker.
- Prepare and crimp the conductor lug
Trim protruding insulation even with the end of the cable adapter without damaging the adapter or conductor. Exposed conductor length must be 4 3/8 in. to 4 11/16 in. (111 mm to 119 mm); redo the assembly if it is outside this range. Insert the conductor into the compression lug, wire brush aluminum conductors immediately before insertion, measure the check dimension, and crimp the lug per the lug instructions. Wipe off excess inhibitor after crimping.
- Install the elbow body
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance, then push the elbow onto the adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the adapter remains flush with the tape marker; if not, reposition it. Remove the tape marker after the elbow is seated.
- Connect the elbow to the mating product
Keep all equipment de-energized and do not connect or disconnect while energized. Remove protective caps, install the threaded stud if the mating part does not already have one, and clean and lubricate both mating surfaces. Push the elbow onto the mating part and align the compression lug hole with the stud. For the opposite end, insert the mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, hand tighten, and torque to the mating-part instructions.
- Install the insulating plug or voltage detection cap
If an insulating plug is used as the mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap, place it on the elbow, and press firmly until it snaps into place. Keep the cap installed whenever the direct access port is not being used.
- Ground the shield and complete final checks
Insert a No. 14 AWG copper-equivalent wire through the grounding eye, form a small loop without damaging the eye, and connect it to ground with a suitable connector. Ground the cable shield using the grounding device instructions or an alternate approved method, and waterproof the jacket if needed to prevent moisture entry. Verify all components are properly tightened to the specified torque before energizing.
- Perform direct voltage testing only with approved adapters
For direct voltage testing, remove the cap temporarily with a high-voltage insulated hot stick and use only an approved direct voltage test port adapter and compatible meter. Never insert any other object into the direct test port, and reinstall the cap immediately after testing.
