How to Install the K655DLR-L0330 Direct Test Elbow Connector
Installation guide for mounting and wiring the K655DLR-L0330 direct test elbow connector. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Hotstick tool, Crimping tool
Supplies needed:
Mounting screws, Terminal connectors, Lubricant, Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer, Tape marker, Grounding wire, Suitable connector for ground
- Prepare the Cable
Position the cable in its final location with sufficient slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the center line of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm). Follow specific instructions for removing outer jacket, shield wires, flat metallic tape shield, fabric tape shield, longitudinally corrugated shield, UNISHIELD cable, lead sheath cable, or semi-con shield as applicable to your cable type. Ensure all dimensions are precise and do not nick the cable insulation.
- Install the Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45° angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare the Conductor
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the length of the exposed conductor is between 4-3/8” (111mm) and 4-11/16” (119mm). If not, redo the assembly. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor.
- Install the Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it should be less than 6-1/2” (165mm). Crimp the compression lug according to its specific instructions. Wipe excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be between 6-1/2” to 7-1/4” (165mm – 184mm).
- Install the Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect to Mating Product
WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud into the mating part if it is not already equipped. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part. Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow, insert it into the elbow, engage threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug (if applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow. Push down firmly until the cap snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a piece of wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions provided with the grounding device or an alternate method if no device is used. It is recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
