How to Install K655/K675DLR Direct Test Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation of 600/900 ampere K655/K675DLR Direct Test Elbow Connectors, ensuring fully shielded and submersible connections to high voltage apparatus.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Hotstick tool (for test port operations), Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

K655/K675DLR Elbow connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug (if used), Lubricant, Threaded stud (if mating part not equipped), Vinyl plastic tape (if applicable), Tape marker (if applicable), Ground wire, Suitable ground connector

  1. De-energize and Inspect Apparatus

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Follow all operating instructions for loadbreak products and ensure deadbreak connectors are de-energized before operation. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury. Check package contents for completeness and ensure proper fit with cable and/or mating products.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Position the cable in its final assembled position with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm). Remove the outer jacket to 12-3/4” (324mm). Prepare the shield wires (fold back, remove tape, or remove corrugated shield as applicable). Remove the semi-con shield to 9-3/4” (248mm) or 10-3/4” (273mm) as shown, ensuring not to cut or nick the cable insulation. Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working toward the semi-con shield.

  3. Install Cable Adapter and Compression Lug

Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, ensuring not to cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor length should be 4-3/8” to 4-11/16” (111mm to 119mm). For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be less than 6-1/2” (165mm)). Crimp the compression lug according to its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. The distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6-1/2” to 7-1/4” (165mm to 184mm).

  4. Install the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  5. Connect to Mating Product

DANGER: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it's not already equipped. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud. For the opposite end, clean and lubricate the mating part, insert it into the elbow, engage threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.

  6. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG copper ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, avoiding damage to the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield MUST be grounded. Ground according to instructions supplied with any grounding device used, or via an alternate method if no device is present. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
