How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the new installation of 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable cutter, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Suitable capacitive sensing device
Supplies needed:
167RLR or 168RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, Silicone grease
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and De-energize Apparatus
Before starting, check the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Read all instructions thoroughly. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation or removal of parts to prevent serious or fatal injury.
- Remove Existing Livefront Terminator (if applicable)
If converting a livefront termination, remove the rubber cap from the terminator. Cut off the existing connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base, then remove the terminator housing from the cable. Ensure the circuit remains de-energized.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable squarely to measure 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring not to nick the conductor. Verify the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cut cable.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately after preparation. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for about four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the documentation and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Prepare for Elbow and Bushing Connection
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. The actual connection must be performed using a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool, following operating instructions; never operate by hand.
- Perform Voltage Test (168RLR ONLY)
For 168RLR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable capacitive sensing device (not conventional voltage equipment) to determine if the circuit is energized. WARNING: Contamination or incorrect equipment can give false readings; treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
